Never Say Never: How I Fell in Love with a French Bulldog

For the longest time, I was adamant about not owning a French Bulldog. Ethical considerations weighed heavily on my mind. The breed's reputation for health issues and the ethical concerns surrounding breeding practices made me firm in my stance. I was convinced that French Bulldogs were not for me, and I had no qualms about declaring this to anyone who asked. I only loved big dogs, anything smaller than a Boxer was not for me, or so I thought.

But as they say, Never say never.

Life has a funny way of challenging our convictions, often when we least expect it. My perspective shifted during a chance encounter with Lisa Nashman's client. Lisa's kennel, LMN Bulldogs, was renowned for producing adorable French Bulldogs but for prioritizing health, intelligence, and well-being in their breeding practices. Intrigued by her approach, I found myself open to learning more.

It was during a visit with one of Lisa's dog owners that I met Almira—she captured my heart instantly. She was undeniably cute, with those big expressive eyes and that signature Frenchie charm. But what truly impressed me was her demeanour. She was smart, well-adjusted, and radiated a sense of confidence that I hadn't expected to see.

Lisa explained the rigorous health screenings and ethical breeding standards she adhered to, aiming to mitigate the common health issues that plague the breed. Her dedication and genuine love for her dogs were evident. She didn't just breed puppies; she nurtured them, ensuring they were well-socialized and ready for their forever homes.

I spent time training and playing with the little Frenchie, observing her interactions, I asked Lisa countless questions. Each answer, each wag of the puppy's tail, chipped away at my resolve. Here was a breeder who was making a difference, and a puppy who defied my preconceived notions. By the end of the visit, my heart had decided what my mind had resisted for so long. I knew a Frenchie puppy was meant to be part of my life. She wasn't just a cute face; she was a testament to the potential of responsible breeding.

Coming Home

This weekend, she will be arriving at my home. I am excited and a bit nervous, but more than anything, I am filled with a profound sense of joy and anticipation. The journey that led me here has been unexpected, but it has taught me a valuable lesson about keeping an open mind and heart.

Adding to the excitement is the fact that this French Bulldog will be more than just a pet—she will be my service dog for ventricular fibrillation. Her training will help me manage this serious heart condition, providing me with the support and assurance I need in my daily life. Knowing that she will play such a crucial role in my health and well-being only deepens the bond I feel with her already.

In welcoming this French Bulldog into my life, I am reminded of the wisdom in the saying, Never say never. Sometimes, the things we are most resistant to can bring unexpected joy and fulfillment. And while I still hold strong views on ethical breeding, I now understand that exceptions exist and that change is possible through responsible practices.

So, here's to new beginnings, unexpected friendships, and the little French Bulldog who reminded me that some rules are meant to be broken. Welcome home, little one. I can't wait to see the adventures we will share together and the peace of mind you will bring into my life.

Cheers.
G.
